The main activities of the Natural History Museum of Crete focuses on collections and archives, research, education, publications, exhibition and partnerships.
In 2012 the NHMC was awarded the Academy of Athens Emmanouil Benakis Prize for its activities in researching, promoting and educating on the natural environment. In 2013, as part of an initiative entitled Academic and Scientific Excellence in Greek Tertiary Education, the NHMC was selected for its wider activities within and beyond the University of Crete.
The NHMC is the only museum in Greece to be recognised as a partner in the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF), which numbers Europe's biggest and most important museums among its members.
