From our earliest texts (Genesis 1:28: “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”) we humans are taught that we are separate from nature.

New publication of the book "Crete, a continent in an island"
The Natural History Museum (University of Crete) has recently released the long-awaited book on the nature of Crete, entitled "Crete, a continent in an island" translated by Ben Petre. This publication is an essay by Dimos Tsantilis, a writer and communicator of science, in cooperation with scientists working at the museum, containing more than 350 color photographs (and drawings).
Honorary Distinctions
Academy of Athens award
In 2012 the NHMC was awarded the Academy of Athens Emmanouil Benakis Prize for its activities in researching, promoting and educating on the natural environment. In 2013, as part of an initiative entitled Academic and Scientific Excellence in Greek Tertiary Education, the NHMC was selected for its wider activities within and beyond the University of Crete.
Member of the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF)
The NHMC is the only museum in Greece to be recognised as a partner in the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF), which numbers Europe's biggest and most important museums among its members.
