Katerina Vardinoyannis is curator of Invertebrates. She completed her studies in Biology in 1985 at the Department of Biology in the University of Athens, and her PhD in 1994 at the same department on «Biogeography of terrestrial molluscs in the South Aegean Island Arc”. Since 1994 she is working as a researcher in the NHMC and as a curator she is managing, enlarges and studies the collections of the Invertebrates of NHMC. Also as a specialist in terrestrial molluscs, contributes in all needs in the exhibitions of NHMC by all means – texts, photographs, specimens – and speeches.
She is studying for more than 30 years land gastropods of Greece and Cyprus (e.g. senior author of “Land snails of Greece, 2018”, “Atlas of land snails of Cyprus, 2012”, and co-author in “European Red List of Terrestrial Gastropods, IUCN, 2019”. As a researcher of the NHMC she has participated in all its scientific and educational expeditions in Greece and the Mediterranean countries. Also, she has organized malacological expeditions in Greece, mainly in the Aegean islands.
She has published 31 papers in peer reviewed journals and participated in 36 scientific congresses on biogeography, ecology and malacology with 61 announcements. Also, she is author or co-author on chapters in 7 books for Greek land snails. In the Division of Invertebrates, under her supervision or collaboration 15 Undergraduate Thesis, 10 Master Thesis dealing with land or freshwater molluscs have been completed. She has participated in 42 national or international scientific programs as a malacologist. Furthermore, she regularly gives lectures in the Department of Biology for undergraduate or postgraduate students on molluscs or biogeography. At the same time, due to the richness of the collections, she has collaboration with several researchers, mainly from abroad.
She is a member of the Hellenic Malacological Society, the Hellenic Zoological Society, the Hellenic Ecological Society and the Hellenic Evolutionary Society.
