The Information Centre “NATURA 2000 HALL” is a hall dedicated to the areas of the NATURA 2000 Network of Crete.

It was completed in September 2016 in the framework of the European LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete programme. The objective of the Information Centre is to acquaint residents and visitors with the protected areas of the NATURA 2000 Network of Crete. It includes four (4) interactive new technology systems, which present in a simple and fun way the specific characteristics of these regions, the ecosystems and the species they host, the protection regime applicable to them, and the relevant threats, as well as their importance and contribution to the social and economic welfare of the island.

Through interactive screens, in a pleasant and entertaining way, visitors can enjoy rare images of rural Crete, understand the direct connection of various human professions with the natural environment, and learn how human activities may affect the ecological balance and health of natural ecosystems, along with the fauna and flora that share with us this charismatic place.

Optical illusions, light experiments, and technological applications guide us through the fascinating world of light and optics. Take a snap as you “magically” float in the air, get “electrified” with a plasma globe, have fun with lasers and lenses, and discover all the mysteries of light!

The “Light Mysteries” exhibition is a production of the Hellenic Institute of Holography and opened its doors in November 2013. It includes exhibits related to the basic principles of optics, 3D imaging, visual paradoxes, and much more. The Museum of Optics of the University of Saint Petersburg (ITMO) and the Institute of Electro Structure & Laser of the Technology and Research Foundation of Crete (IHDL-ITE) participated in the organization of this exhibition. The aim of this project is to invite visitors of all ages to discover the strange journey of light. Optical illusions introduce us to the basic principles of geometrical optics in a fun and interactive way. Intriguing experimental setups demonstrate the scientific background of these paradoxes. The supervision of the original educational provisions belongs to the physicist Andreas Sarakinos. In the Darkroom, laser-harp music and luminous graffiti art entertain the visitors as they explore phenomena visible only under UV light.

Visit the coniferous forests of Lebanon, South Turkey, and Bulgaria and meet, among dozens of other animals and plants, the majestic feline Lynx, the unique Cedar of Lebanon, and Hyrax, an unexpected elephant relative!

Discover the astonishing variety of organisms that inhabit our region and make the Mediterranean basin one of the top biodiversity hotspots on our planet!

The shrublands are one of the most characteristic ecosystems in the Mediterranean area and host numerous endemic organisms (organisms you won’t find anywhere else in the world!). Travel from Crete to Libya and then back to the Balkans and see up close the rare Cretan wildcat, the formidable spines of the Porcupine, and the wise owl of goddess Athena!

Stand in front of a real bear, wolf, and wild boar. Try to find the different species of owl and woodpecker hiding in the tree branches and learn all about the remarkable species you can find in a deciduous forest!

Have you ever seen what a real viper looks like? Did you know how frogs breathe? Can you identify a bear footprint? Discover the answers to these and many other exciting questions by meeting our little friends in the Living Museum!

At first glance, these ecosystems seem poor in biodiversity. But if you look closer, a surprising variety of organisms will reveal! And if you look carefully, you will discover all the outstanding adaptations that desert animals and plants have to survive in these extreme, yet fragile, ecosystems!

Wetlands are the natural “labs” for cleaning polluted water and are champions in carbon storage. They provide clean water, protection from floods, numerous materials, and medicines, while they are a vital habitat for many living organisms. Unfortunately, our planet lost about 87% of its wetlands over the last 300 years. Explore these precious ecosystems, the creatures that inhabit them, and learn about the dangers that threaten them.

Discovery centre is a 250 sq.m. area, specially designed for children. It is a model of the various ecosystems of Crete enriched with a multitude of original and interactive games that invite our little friends to discover while playing. Start an excavation to uncover the fossilized bones of the largest animal that ever lived on the island! Enter a cave and explore, sit around the campfire, study animals and plants at the scientist’s bench, and experience the nature of Crete with all your senses.

Enjoy a relaxing walk among some of the most characteristic plants of the island and rest under the shadow of giant dinosaurs!

Stand next to the largest animal that ever lived on Crete! A physical representation of this gigantic prehistoric animal. Observe all of the spectacular features that make it stand out. Discover when and where it lived, what it ate when it went extinct, and how the curiosity of a little girl from Sitia led to its discovery!

An exhibition of robotic, accurate reproductions of the world’s most remarkable dinosaurs, from the famous Tyrannosaurus rex to the giant Argentinosaurus and the tiny Micropachycephalosaurus. Travel back millions of years and walk among these impressive and fascinating creatures.

Ένας ειδικά διαμορφωμένος χώρος, τριών επιπέδων όπου μικροί και μεγάλοι μπορούν να μάθουν μέσα από ενημερωτικά σεμινάρια, εκπαιδευτικές εκδηλώσεις και πρακτικά εργαστήρια.

Σεμινάρια Περιβαλλοντικής Εκπαίδευσης και Δια Βίου Μάθησης υλοποιούνται από το 1998 στο ΜΦΙΚ και απευθύνονται σε Εκπαιδευτικούς, αλλά και σε άλλες επαγγελματικές ομάδες. Από το 2012 όλα τα σεμινάρια της  Περιβαλλοντικής Εκπαίδευσης – Δια Βίου Μάθησης υλοποιούνται στο Κέντρο Περιβαλλοντικής Κατάρτισης του ΜΦΙΚ (ΚΕΠΕΚΑ-ΜΦΙΚ), το οποίο λειτουργεί με την 3633/30-03-2012 έγκριση της Συγκλήτου του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης. Το αντικείμενο δράσης του ΚΕΠΕΚΑ-ΜΦΙΚ είναι η παροχή συνεχιζόμενης Περιβαλλοντικής Εκπαίδευσης, κατάρτισης, ευαισθητοποίησης, επιμόρφωσης, ειδικής πληροφόρησης και συναφών δραστηριοτήτων (έρευνες – μελέτες, ημερίδες, συνέδρια, εκπαιδευτικά βοηθήματα για τους καταρτιζόμενους, συμμετοχή σε ολοκληρωμένα προγράμματα, Κοινοτικές πρωτοβουλίες, δράσεις προώθησης και υποστήριξης της Απασχόλησης και της Δια Βίου Εκπαίδευσης) σε περιβαλλοντικά θέματα της ανατολικής Μεσογείου. Η παρεχόμενη κατάρτιση, που συνδέει τη θεωρητική, την πρακτική και την εργαστηριακή γνώση εντάσσεται τόσο στο χώρο της εξ’ Αποστάσεως Εκπαίδευσης, όσο και στο χώρο της Σεμιναριακής Εκπαίδευσης. Για την υλοποίηση των παραπάνω το ΚΕΠΕΚΑ-ΜΦΙΚ αναπτύσσει συνεργασίες με αρμόδιους φορείς και φυσικά και νομικά πρόσωπα Δημοσίου ή Ιδιωτικού Δικαίου. Απευθύνεται σε όλους τους ενήλικες Έλληνες & ξένους, εργαζόμενους σε διάφορους τομείς, όπως τουρισμό ή εκπαίδευση, σε εθελοντές, ανέργους, φοιτητές κ.ά., οι οποίοι ενδιαφέρονται να διευρύνουν ή να επικαιροποιήσουν τις γνώσεις και το βιογραφικό τους, σε περιβαλλοντικά θέματα της ανατολικής Μεσογείου. Οι διδάσκοντες του κέντρου είναι μέλη ΔΕΠ του Παν/μίου Κρήτης ή άλλων Πανεπιστημίων, εξειδικευμένο προσωπικό του ΜΦΙΚ ή άλλων φορέων καθώς και ερευνητές διαφόρων ερευνητικών ιδρυμάτων.

Το ΚΕΠΕΚΑ-ΜΦΙΚ διαθέτει 4 χώρους:

Αίθουσα Θεωρίας, όπου γίνεται η θεωρητική κατάρτιση, συζήτηση ή παρουσιάσεις στην ολομέλεια των επιμορφούμενων αλλά και η πρόσβαση στην πληροφορία και τις πηγές βιβλιογραφίας μέσα από το διαδίκτυο.

Αίθουσα Δραστηριοτήτων, όπου οι εκπαιδευόμενοι, σε ομάδες, μπορούν να καταρτιστούν σε Εκπαιδευτικές τεχνικές, όπως παιχνίδια ρόλων, προσομοίωση, κατασκευές, εικαστικά κ.ά.

Δύο Αίθουσες Εργαστηρίου, εξοπλισμένες με στερεοσκόπια που επιτρέπουν την τρισδιάστατη παρατήρηση ζωικών και φυτικών οργανισμών, πετρωμάτων, απολιθωμάτων κ.ά.

Μια έκθεση με όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά είδη ζώων, φυτών και ορυκτών του νησιού. Μοναδικά απολιθώματα ξεδιπλώνουν το πλούσιο παρελθόν της περιοχής, ενώ στο μινωικό τραπέζι ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να ανακαλύψει τα φυτά που χρησιμοποιούνταν από τους Μινωίτες στη διατροφή τους.

Η έκθεση «Κρήτη, μια ήπειρος σ’ ένα νησί», βασισμένη πάνω στο ομώνυμο βιβλίο του Δήμου Τσαντίλη που έχει εκδώσει το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Κρήτης πριν από δύο χρόνια, καλύπτει τα πιο βασικά στοιχεία της Κρητικής Ποικιλότητας. Αναπτύσσεται σε μία αίθουσα 300 τμ. και παρουσιάζει σε κείμενα, εκθέματα, διοράματα, μικροδιοράματα, ηλεκτρονικά μέσα και διαδραστικά παιχνίδια, τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά και στοιχεία του κρητικού περιβάλλοντος. Αρχίζει με μια αναφορά στα ορυκτά και πετρώματα, στα απολιθώματα όπου παρουσιάζεται μέρος της συλλογής Kuss (Γερμανός επιστήμονας), καθώς και το δεινοθήριο. Ακολούθως δίνονται στοιχεία για την ποικιλότητα των φυτών, καθώς και τα φυτά στο Μινωικό Τραπέζι. Παρουσιάζονται στοιχεία για τα αρθρόποδα, τα σαλιγκάρια και τα κυρίαρχα σπονδυλωτά, όπως τα αρπακτικά πουλιά, τις κουκουβάγιες, τα ερπετά και τα θηλαστικά. Μέσα από την έκθεση αυτή ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να πάρει τις πιο σημαντικές πληροφορίες για τη μοναδικότητα του περιβάλλοντος της Κρήτης. Η έκθεση συνδιοργανώθηκε από το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Κρήτης-Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης, την Περιφέρεια Κρήτης, καθώς και τον Σύλλογο Φίλοι του Μουσείου Φυσικής Ιστορίας Κρήτης.

In a specially designed environment, the visitor can experience earthquakes up to 7.6 Richter degrees, and get more familiar with this natural event. Useful information for a more complete understanding of earthquakes and correct practices are also offered.

“Encelados” simulates real earthquakes in a school classroom. Visitors learn all about earthquakes and the seismicity of the eastern Mediterranean through specially designed programs in collaboration with O.A.S.P. (both in Greek and English).

Attempting to raise awareness, improve knowledge about earthquakes, and train specific groups (educators, parents, volunteers, and civil protection agents), the Natural History Museum of Crete coordinates the RACCE program. The program is financed by the Civil Protection Service 2010, on the initiative of the European Union.
