BIOTALENT is an ERASMUS PLUS – Key Action 2 program for the promotion of “Strategic Partnerships”, which strengthen cooperation for innovation and exchange of good practices.
The implementation of the program will take three years.
There are 5 participants: 2 from Belgium and 1 from Hungary, Portugal and Greece (Crete).
Specifically, these bodies are the following:

  • Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) – Coordinator
  • Agrupamento de Escolas de Mangualde (AEM-EduFor)
  • Hungarian Natural History Museum (HNHM)
  • University of Crete – Natural History Museum of Crete (UOC-NHMC)
  • CETAF (Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities)

The University of Crete participates with three representatives: a team from MFIK, a team from UCNET and Mr. Panagiotis Anastasiadis, Associate Professor of Lifelong and Distance Education using ICT, from the Pedagogical School in Rethymnon.
BIOTALENT aims to develop a blended learning model, which will include a combination of online courses (e-learning module) and courses with physical presence of trainers and learners (face-to-face module).
The topic is the importance of MFI collections, their relationship to biodiversity, and consequently everything related to the imbalance and the reduction of biodiversity on the planet. Students will also be given the opportunity to choose one of two additional topics, either “Medicinal Plants” or “Herpetofauna” for a more specialized approach.
An online Moodle 3.0 platform will be set up for online courses, which at the end of the program will be available and accessible to all CETAF member museums, which will be able to create their own courses. As for the face-to-face phase of the pilot courses, this will take place at MFIK and will include a course in the collections and in the field.
This pilot course will cover a total of 80 hours of attendance.
The trainees will receive an official European certificate of attendance.

The courses will be able to attend:

  • Teachers
  • Professors of biology and other natural sciences (STEM)
  • Teachers and other staff in natural history museums, botanical gardens, science centers and other nature organizations (NGOs, Associations, etc.)
  • Unemployed who have studied environmental sciences, etc.

The BIOTALENT program website (http://biotalent.myspecies.info), which will be available soon, will post all the deliverables and news of the program.
