The objective of the Information Centre is to acquaint residents and visitors with the protected areas of the NATURA 2000 Network of Crete. It includes four (4) interactive new technology systems, which present in a simple and fun way the specific characteristics of these regions, the ecosystems and the species they host, the protection regime applicable to them, and the relevant threats, as well as their importance and contribution to the social and economic welfare of the island.

Through interactive screens, in a pleasant and entertaining way, visitors can enjoy rare images of rural Crete, understand the direct connection of various human professions with the natural environment, and learn how human activities may affect the ecological balance and health of natural ecosystems, along with the fauna and flora that share with us this charismatic place.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”nectarslider_style” images=”39130,39128,39108,39211″ image_loading=”default” bullet_navigation_style=”see_through” onclick=”link_image”][/toggle][/toggles][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”none” equal_height=”yes” content_placement=”top” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” bg_color=”#91b7bc” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”1%” bottom_padding=”1%” left_padding_desktop=”1%” right_padding_desktop=”1%” text_color=”light” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” color_overlay_2=”#ffffff” advanced_gradient_angle=”90″ overlay_strength=”0.8″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” gradient_type=”default” shape_type=”speech”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][image_with_animation image_url=”511252″ image_size=”full” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][toggles style=”minimal_shadow” border_radius=”3px”][toggle color=”Default” heading_tag=”h4″ heading_tag_functionality=”default” title=”1) The evolution of life”][vc_column_text]Familiarize yourself with key concepts of evolutionary theory, such as abiogenesis and speciation, and engage in conversation with the father of evolutionary theory, Charles Darwin! Discover fossils from the Museum’s collection and come face to face with impressive life-size models, including a sirenian, a dwarf mammoth and a giant owl![/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”nectarslider_style” images=”512323,512324,512325,512322″ image_loading=”default” bullet_navigation_style=”see_through” onclick=”link_image”][/toggle][toggle color=”Default” heading_tag=”h4″ heading_tag_functionality=”default” title=”3) Mountain and cave of Crete”][vc_column_text]Crete hides a fascinating geological story within its mountains! Three major rock formations — marbles, schists, quartzites, limestones and dolomites — have shaped the island’s unique landscapes over millions of years, creating plateaus, gorges and caves. Explore the geological structure of Crete and step inside a life-size cave![/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”nectarslider_style” images=”511973,511974″ image_loading=”default” bullet_navigation_style=”see_through” onclick=”link_image”][/toggle][toggle color=”Default” heading_tag=”h4″ heading_tag_functionality=”default” title=”4) From Tethus to modern Crete”][vc_column_text]The Mediterranean is the last remnant of the ancient Tethys Ocean. The exhibition invites you on a fascinating journey through millions of years of geological history, using rocks, simulations and interactive exhibits to reveal a world that usually remains hidden from view: the slow movements of tectonic plates, faults and earthquakes, volcanoes and the movement of magma. Along the Greek subduction zone, tectonic plates continue to move, shaping the Aegean and causing earthquakes, volcanic activity and the uplift of the Aegean arc. Each rock is a trace of this long geological journey, while each fault bears the imprint of the forces that continue to shape the Earth. Discover the geological history of the Mediterranean and the Aegean and explore a planet that is still in constant motion.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”nectarslider_style” images=”512317,512318,512319,512320,512326″ image_loading=”default” bullet_navigation_style=”see_through” onclick=”link_image”][/toggle][toggle color=”Default” heading_tag=”h4″ heading_tag_functionality=”default” title=”5) Earthquake simulator”][vc_column_text]In a specially designed environment, the visitor can experience earthquakes up to 7.6 Richter degrees, and get more familiar with this natural event. The Cretan landscape, with its mountains, plains, and sea, provided the Minoans with raw materials, food, and opportunities for communication and trade, while also shaping their architecture, art, religion, and mythology. From the island’s plants and animals to everyday diet and impressive palaces, every aspect of Minoan life reveals a close relationship with the natural environment. Archaeological finds and modern ancient-DNA analyses shed further light on the identity and origins of the Minoans, allowing us to discover not only their civilisation, but also the people who created it. Despite the natural disasters and profound changes that led to its decline, Minoan civilisation left a unique and enduring mark on the history of Crete, the Aegean and the eastern Mediterrenean.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”nectarslider_style” images=”512307,512308,512309″ image_loading=”default” bullet_navigation_style=”see_through” onclick=”link_image”][/toggle][/toggles][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”none” equal_height=”yes” content_placement=”top” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” bg_color=”#d7d7d7″ scene_position=”center” top_padding=”1%” bottom_padding=”1%” left_padding_desktop=”10%” right_padding_desktop=”10%” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” disable_element=”yes” color_overlay_2=”#ffffff” advanced_gradient_angle=”90″ overlay_strength=”0.8″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” gradient_type=”default” shape_type=”speech”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][image_with_animation image_url=”511251″ image_size=”full” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”right” img_link_target=”lightbox” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” img_link=”https://www.nhmc.uoc.gr/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/SIMANSEIS_big_2560px.jpg”][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text] The Natural History Museum of Crete is housed in the renovated former premises of the Heraklion Electricity Corporation, on Dermatas Bay.
