Shrubland of the Balkans diorama
Photo of Glass lizard, Pseudopus apodus. It is a robust legless lizard reaching 1.4 m in length. As suggested by its name, it is indeed a lizard species but its limbs are entirely reduced. It is very common in bushy areas, where it hunts insects, snails and small mammals. It lives throughout the Balkans and the Middle East. If carefully observed, it can be easily distinguished from a snake by its ears and eye lids. It consumes various invertebrates and small mammals.
