Mountainous conifers (southern Bulgaria) diorama
Photo of a Lynx, Lynx lynx, a medium-sized cat native to European and Siberian forests, South Asia and East Asia. In historical times, the Lynx was widespread in Greece wherever it found the suitable habitat (forests) and a sufficient prey base (especially small ungulates such as the roe deer). Now, Lynx populations have been almost disappeared from Greece, due to habitat loss (deforestation and expansion of agriculture), prey reduction (reduction of ungulate populations) and direct persecution as a result of conflict with human interests (depredation on domestic stock and competition for game).
