Photo of the African Sulcata Tortoise, Geochelone sulcata. The African Sulcata Tortoise is surpassed in size only by the giant tortoises of the Galapagos islands. African Sulcatas come from the hot, arid regions of the Sub-Sahara. In the wild, Sulcatas "aestivate", which means they go underground for months during intolerable heat and drought.
