Photo of Mastic tree, Pistacia lentiscus var. chia, in cultivation. This is the cultivated variety (var. chia) of Lentisk that is formed as a tree after pruning. In the island of Chios where it is cultivated, small incisions are made on its bark and branches, and the secreted gum, is harvested from the ground.
