Photo of Cretan Iris, Iris unguicularis subsp. cretensis, in its natural environment. This is a perennial shrub that grows in tufts. It is an endemic subspecies of Crete and Karpathos islands in Greece. It prefers rocky places, banks and open scrub. Its yellow lilac flowers appear from January to March.
