Horned viper, Cerastes cerastes

Photo of the Horned viper, Cerastes cerastes, whose name is derived from the two horns over its eyes, whose adaptive value remains unknown. Horns are characteristic of the Saharan populations, whereas they are absent from the populations that occur in the Arabian peninsula.
